About Us & Our History: The Hole in the Wall

We want to share our story about Blairsville's last Historic Diner. Union County is rich with history in which the The Hole in the Wall plays an important role.(We are even mentioned in Wikipedia's Blairsville,Ga History) On any given day you can come by ,meet the locals, set a spell & listen to tales of days gone by. There's ALWAYS a story to be told & a community crossword puzzle or 2 on the table. People that came here  as youths, still come in here today!!!

It all started back in the 1930's when Margie Henson started selling sandwiches out of her truck (or it may have been a trailer). Her efforts were so successful that she purchased the property from Pat Haralson and built the restauraunt in 1931.

During the war years, The Hole in the Wall did double duty as a Trailways Bus Stop where tickets were sold inside. It was also the last stop for local boys waiting for the bus to take them off to war (the draft board was next door in King's 5 and 10 cent store, which still stands in it's original state operating as Kings 5 & 10). The restaurant also served as a dentist office twice a year when Doc McDonald made his rounds. You could eat lunch and then get a tooth pulled.  If customers didn't want a burger or sandwich, there was always fried chicken, green beans, coleslaw, and mashed potatoes with gravy. People can remember crowding three deep into the booths and waitresses running back and forth from the kitchen, as they still do today..

Records show that many people have owned and/or managed the restaurant at that location (some while living in an apartment upstairs). Claude Butt, Bob & Zora Butt ( Butt's Café had hamburgers ten cents each during WWII, we actually have pictures found from back in those days hanging on our walls), The Rogers, Robert Head, Sr., Paul Gibson, Margie Harkins,The Helton's, Gail Romine, and The Harvey's are some of the recorded names. It is currently owned by Chef Mark Cox & Loretta Durden who brought it back to life in 2006, restoring & maintaining it's rich history.
